What do we know about general anesthesia?

General anesthesia is one of the biggest medical breakthroughs of all time. It opened the door to countless life-saving procedures that would previously not been possible. What really makes this topic so interesting, however, is that we have no idea how it works. This raises questions about the interplay between the conscious and unconscious mind, and how anesthesia is able to inhibit their communication. This video presents the history of anesthesia and the different types of anesthesia. It then focuses on general anesthesia and some of its unknowns as well as the theory behind the ability of anesthesia to induce unconsciousness. Risks of anesthesia are also mentioned.
