Video-based mobile application for perioperative patient education
Looks at the use of a mobile health application to educate patients about upcoming surgeries.
Perioperative care can bring many challenges to all persons involved in the process. Medical practitioners are constantly concerned about patient safety, relaying information appropriately and the importance of informed decisions. Patients are sometimes provided with documentation to educate themselves about the procedure, which differs greatly from one physician to another. We assume that patients have read and understood the details about their surgery but how do we really know the patient understands the concerns and risks? If a patient had questions before signing the final consent form, how would they get those questions answered? The problem is that clinicians are spending a considerable amount of time answering questions, drawing diagrams and walking patients through steps of the surgery, while part of this education process could be done differently and more consistently. This video looks at a potential solution to this problem through the effective use of a mobile health application.
