The acting chair of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine has taken on the role long-term.
Murray Potter, professor of pathology and molecular medicine, has been acting chair since July 1, 2017, and his five-year term as chair begins Oct. 1.
“I am honoured that faculty leaders and fellow department members on the selection committee chose me to be the next chair of our department,” said Potter. “I look forward to building a shared vision for Pathology and Molecular Medicine with my department members and colleagues across the Faculty of Health Sciences and McMaster University.”
Potter has two Bachelor of Science degrees and a medical degree from the University of Manitoba. He completed his residency in medical biochemistry at McMaster.
He received his initial appointment as assistant professor of pathology and molecular medicine at McMaster in 2002, and became a professor in 2016.
He has held a number of leadership roles in the department including associate chair of education and department education coordinator.
In addition to his administrative roles, he has an active research program focusing on inborn errors of metabolism. This includes clinical research in the treatment of these disorders and the development of diagnostic tests.
“After interviewing internal and external candidates for the role, the selection committee unanimously agreed that Dr. Potter was the best candidate for the position,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
“Our department chairs are selected based on qualities of intellectual and administrative leadership and academic distinction. Dr. Potter demonstrates these qualities and I know he will continue to excel at the helm of this important department.”
