Albina Veltman has been selected as our Inaugural Associate Chair of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous Reconciliation (EDI & IR), effective January 1st, 2022.
Albina has a long commitment to EDI and culturally sensitive and anti-oppressive care to diverse populations, and these have played a central role in her teaching and administrative leadership. They are also reflected in her research, as the lead author of the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s position paper on mental health care for individuals who identified as LGBTQ in 2014 and an expert panel member for the RNAO best practice guidelines on promoting health equity for 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
For three years, she served as the inaugural Diversity and Engagement Chair for the Undergraduate MD Program at McMaster. She is also an active member of PRISM (our department’s 2SLGBTQI+ working group), our postgrad program’s EDI curriculum committee, the Faculty of Health Sciences’ EDI Advisory Committee and EDI Measurement Working Group, the Undergraduate MD Program’s Indigenous Stream Admissions Committee, and the EDI Council at St. Joseph’s Healthcare.
Albina brings her passion for EDI, her proven commitment to equity in education and in healthcare, and her many years of experience working in this area to this important role.
