Meet the Faculty of Health Sciences executive leadership team
McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences executive leadership team includes the dean and vice-president, the executive vice-dean and associate-vice president (Academic), and seven vice-deans, who each have important and unique areas of responsibility in support of the Faculty, its key groups and the university’s goals and objectives.

Paul O’Byrne, Dean and Vice-President of Health Sciences
My role is to oversee the operation and management of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), the provision of academic leadership in the Faculty, fiscal management, and relations of the Faculty with agencies and institutions external to the university. I am a member of the president’s Executive group and collaborate with the provost and vice-presidents of Academic, Research, Administration and University Advancement to support the president in strategic decision-making, and setting the strategic direction and priorities of the university.
Dina Brooks, Executive Vice-Dean and Associate Vice-President (Academic)
My role is to work in tandem with the dean and vice-president to manage the academic and operational functions of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). As part of this, I collaborate closely with the provost and vice-president (Academic), vice-provosts, Faculty deans and other senior leaders across the university and with the associate vice-president (Global Health), vice-deans, associate deans, department chairs, and associate vice-president & chief administrative officer within FHS.
Jonathan Bramson, Vice-Dean, Research
My role is to guide the research mission of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and this includes other responsibilities delegated by the dean and vice-president to facilitate the conduct of research and operational functions of the Faculty. I also interface with research leaders in other Faculties, research leaders at our hospital partners and directors of research centres and institutes within FHS to promote research and set research priorities.
Sandra Carroll, Vice-Dean, Health Sciences and Executive Director, School of Nursing
My role is to be the senior academic and administrative leader of the School of Nursing. I am responsible for the educational, research and practice activities of the School, aligning with the mission of the Faculty of Health Sciences and promotion of the discipline within the Faculty, the university, and external communities.
Steven Hanna, Vice-Dean, Health Sciences and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies (Health Sciences)
My role is to further McMaster’s goals regarding graduate education and research training in health sciences, and to provide leadership and coordination for all activities related to those goals. I work closely with the assistant, associate and vice-deans of the Faculty and the School of Graduate Studies to ensure that both Faculty-specific and university-wide goals are addressed, and I work to enhance the quality of life and sense of community amongst the diverse group of graduate students and research trainees within the Faculty.
Barry Lumb, Vice-Dean, Clinical Services
My role is to oversee and provide strategic advice to the dean and vice-president on the clinical activities that may impact the Faculty’s academic mission at the organizational level. I work closely with the associate vice-presidents, vice-deans, chief operating officer, department chairs and the relevant senior leadership teams on issues affecting the interface between the Faculty and the affiliated institutions. I also represent the clinical faculty at the provincial level on matters relevant to the alternate funding plans (AFPs).
Mark Walton, Vice-Dean, Faculty Affairs
My role is to guide matters related to faculty affairs, academic leadership and professional development and Code of Conduct. I oversee the Faculty’s strategy for furthering the success, well-being, and academic advancement of our faculty. I consult with partners within the university, community and partner hospitals and advise the dean and vice-president on issues that will guide those responsible for operationalizing the Faculty’s mission related to faculty affairs. I also oversee the activities of the Continuing Professional Development Office through the associate dean, Continuing Professional Development and the well-being portfolio through the director of Faculty Well-Being.
Rob Whyte, Vice-Dean, Education
My role is to assist the dean and vice-president, Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) with guiding the Faculty’s educational mission, and to promote and develop both undergraduate and health professional education within FHS in concert with the other academic objectives of the Faculty. I also support graduate and continuing health education, and the leaders of these portfolios, where appropriate.
Sarah Wojkowski, Vice-Dean, Health Sciences and Executive Director, School of Rehabilitation Science
My role is to be responsible for the educational, research and service activities of the School, the promotion of rehabilitation science within the Faculty of Health Sciences, the university, and the external community. I am also responsible for the development and utilization of faculty, and developing a culture where students, staff and faculty, and integrated education, research and service are valued and promoted.
