On Wednesday September 29th we held face to face (2 meters apart) Department of Medicine awards dinner. We had about 60 people in attendance and the event was a huge success. Thanks to LIUNA station for their extraordinary attention to COVID protocols and for all the preparations. Also thanks to Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Dr. Jack Hirsh and Dr. Allyn Walsh for attending.

Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Sherbino and Dr. Jonathon Derrick (“Rick”) Adachi who were the winners of our major awards and to all the other faculty members who were recognized, particularly our residents for their unbelievable work throughout the COVID pandemic, and to our many leaders who have stepped away from positions in the last 12 months. This event marks our gradual re-emergence from hibernation, although it's also very important to maintain vigilance.

To ensure that our events are as safe as they can be, the Faculty of Health Sciences has developed a policy around McMaster sponsored events. Generally speaking, if you're bringing a group of people together who would not normally meet particularly in a McMaster space for work related events, you need to complete a form and submit it to me upon which I will submit it to the Faculty. A lot of complicated jurisdictional issues could emerge from this, for example, is an evening dinner meeting at a restaurant actually McMaster sponsored? I would ask you to use common sense in interpreting the requirements.

I encourage everyone to start to hold face to face meetings in a safe manner, in compliant environments, with fully vaccinated individuals. We need to start to rebuild our collaborative culture which is the key to our success at McMaster. At least some component of this culture absolutely requires face to face (2 meters apart) interactions.

Dr. Mark Crowther, Chair, Department of Medicin
