The end of June marks an unusual completion of training for more than 300 residents and fellows in the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
The end of June marks an unusual completion of training for more than 300 residents and fellows in the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the tradition of celebrating the milestone with an annual gala dinner at Liuna Station in Hamilton for those who have completed the residency programs in family medicine and the 57 specialty and sub-specialty programs.
PGME, however, still wanted to do something special to celebrate the graduating class. They collaborated with a small group of graduating residents to form a small committee and together decided to put together a yearbook. It features messages from program directors and administrators, Zoom photos of trainees, and messages from allied health workers, medical students and more. The finished project will be sent electronically to the residents by the end of this month, with a hard copy distributed at a later time.
“Although we aren’t able to celebrate together, we still wanted to make this achievement memorable for those marking the completion of their residency programs,” said Parveen Wasi, associate dean of PGME at McMaster. “The yearbook is a tribute to our residents, who have shown remarkable resilience during this difficult time and the hugely positive effect they have on those with whom they train.
“I am proud to see this group of competent, caring physicians and clinicians who have the skills, drive and leadership that is needed now more than ever as we grapple with this pandemic.”
