Faculty of Health Sciences graduates crossed the stage last week during the Spring 2024 convocation ceremonies.
The newly minted alumni celebrated the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance in front of family, friends and supporters.
These ceremonies included a number of longstanding graduation traditions – some are unique to McMaster University, while others are shared with health sciences graduates across the country.
Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, shared his reflections on the Faculty’s traditions to celebrate new graduates in a recent LinkedIn post, shared below.
Armaan Kotadia, who graduated with an honours bachelor of health sciences (BHSc), represented the Faculty of Health Sciences as valedictorian.
Callista Liu, who graduated with a bachelor of science in nursing (BScN), represented the School of Nursing as valedictorian.
During McMaster’s spring convocation, leaders and thinkers across many disciplines were recognized for their tremendous accomplishments and contributions to our communities and our world.
Within the Faculty of Health Sciences, honorary degree recipients included Marnix Heersink, an ophthalmologist and philanthropist. Heersink’s philanthropic legacy includes the Jan and Mien Heersink Reading Pavilion, the Clinic in McMaster’s Health Sciences Library and an investment in global health with the creation of the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
The School of Nursing bestowed an honorary degree on David Olds, an internationally recognized pediatrician and researcher. He is the developer of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), which has proven to be one of most impactful evidence-based preventative interventions in the world, revolutionizing preventive health care services internationally.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
