Let’s talk about minority stress in the workplace
Dec 9, 2024
11:00AM to 12:00PM
Date/Time
Date(s) - 09/12/2024
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Health care workers with minority identities (e.g., sexual, gender, racial, ethnic, differently abled, religious) experience minority stress over and above their occupational stress. Research on minority stress has clearly documented the health impacts of chronic stigma and discrimination-related stress that individuals with minority identities experience in addition to general life stress.
Mental health providers and organizational leadership require cultural sensitivity, training, empathy, and humility to support health care workers with minority identities.
The collaboration between Homewood Health Centre, McMaster University, and Homewood Research Institute (HRI) uses an intersectional lens to provide insight into the lived experiences of health care workers with minority identities.
Join us at 11:00 am (ET) on December 9, 2024 for this free, one-hour symposium featuring:
- Moderation by Dr. Margaret McKinnon, Principal Investigator of McMaster University’s Healthcare Salute project.
- A research presentation on minority stress and resilience among health care workers with minority identities by Dr. Aneesh Joseph of the Trauma & Recovery Research Unit at McMaster University.
- A panel discussion featuring Dr. Ann Malain, Dr. Hygge Schielke, and Dr. Andrew Nicholson on their experiences of organizational support, research, and clinical work with individuals with minority identities.
An audience Q&A session will follow the panel. You will have opportunities to ask questions about this topic. The symposium will be of interest to health care workers, mental health providers and clinicians who work with HCWs, leadership, and organizations. Content will be presented in English. Real-time translation of French captions will be available for interested viewers.
Proudly sponsored by Homewood Health Centre, McMaster University, and Homewood Research Institute.
