Dr. Suresh Menon Wins Department of Medicine Annual Award for Associate Professors
Dr. Menon serves as Member of several national organizations including the Canadian Network of Multiple Sclerosis Clinics, the World Federation of Neurology, and the Indian Academy of Neurology.
Congratulations to Dr. Suresh Menon on being awarded the Department of Medicine Annual Award 2021 for Associate Professors. He was promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 2020.
Dr. Menon obtained his medical degree from Calicut Medical College. This was followed by his post-graduate training, leading to completion of his neurology residency and board certification at the Maharashtra University of Health Science in 2009. Subsequently, he received the McDonald Fellowship Award and moved to Canada to complete additional post-graduate training. Specifically, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in multiple sclerosis at the University of British Columbia from 2011-2013, a clinical fellowship in multiple sclerosis at Western University from 2013-2014, and a clinical fellowship in movement disorders at Western University from 2014-2015. In addition, he has also achieved the specialty certificate in Neurology from the Federation of Royal college of Physicians (UK) and Association of British Neurologists.
Dr. Menon joined the Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in April 2015. In addition to this academic appointment, he was also appointed as an attending physician at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and St. Joseph Hospital.
Since his appointment, Dr. Menon has contributed to a variety of educational roles, including formal and informal clinical teaching and supervision of residents and fellows, curriculum development, academic administration, and undergraduate teaching. He has served as an OSCE coordinator and participated as an OSCE examiner, presented at academic rounds, half-days, and has participated in the resident selection process as a file reviewer and interviewer. He has also been involved in curriculum development initiatives. He developed OSCE scenarios for use in the neurology OSCE examinations and has developed teaching materials. Further, Dr. Menon served as Chair of the OSCE Sub Committee, participates as a Member of the Neurology Residency Program Committee and is the Co- Assistant PD. In addition, he serves as Member of several national organizations in his speciality areas, including the Canadian Network of Multiple Sclerosis Clinics, the World Federation of Neurology, and the Indian Academy of Neurology.
His research interests are mainly in the area of ‘aggressive’ multiple sclerosis. His work involving large databases on MS has helped characterize and provide definitions for aggressive MS and better understand the heterogeneity and natural history of extremes of MS. He is a PI for clinical trials and research interest includes strong therapeutic agents used in highly active disease and de-risking strategies. He has several publications to his credit, is a journal reviewer and is a member of the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Working group (CMSWG) involved in developing the latest Treatment Optimization Recommendations in Multiple Sclerosis 2020.
