All Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) members are strongly encouraged to complete a survey asking about their experiences at the Faculty and how a more inclusive and safe working environment may be fostered.
The survey will also identify the key ingredients towards fostering inclusive excellence across all of the Faculty’s priorities and programming, in keeping with the university’s strategy.
The Diversity and Climate Survey, which includes 62 questions relating to members’ identities and experiences, took more than a year to develop. Its creation was spearheaded by the FHS’s Measurement of Equity and Inclusion Working Group, part of its Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous Reconciliation Advisory Committee.
“Each person’s participation in this survey is very important,” said Paul O’Byrne, FHS dean and vice-president.
“The information you provide will give us a snapshot of our current diversity and your experiences at the FHS; and this will help us identify what can be done to better address faculty and staff needs.
“The survey results will also allow us to provide our current and future members with the equal opportunity to access all the supports they need to reach their academic and professional goals,” he said.
“It is a key stepping stone towards building a brighter world that welcomes and embraces everyone, honouring each and every individual making up the remarkable mosaic that is our Faculty.”
FHS faculty and staff members received an individual invitation to participate from Faculty Affairs about three weeks ago, and again on Thursday, Nov. 25.
Participation in the survey is completely anonymous and confidential and responses will not be linked to one’s identity. The survey will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete and will remain open until December 31, 2021.
The FHS Diversity and Climate Survey gathers in-depth demographic and experiential data from all full-time and part-time faculty and staff members within the FHS. The questions cover nine aspects of identity in a comprehensive questionnaire that includes experiences of workplace climate relating to microaggressions, discrimination and harassment.
The survey should not be confused with the separate McMaster University-wide Diversity Counts Census, nor the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Workforce Survey from Hamilton Health Sciences.
However, each survey is an integral component towards building networks of Inclusive Excellence across McMaster and with the university’s partners.
To encourage people to take part, participants may enter a draw for one of 20 bursaries, worth $500 each, towards the professional development activity of their choice.
Any identifying information disclosed for the purposes of this draw will be stored separately from the survey results to keep responses anonymous.
Surveys were sent to the emails of faculty and staff that are used by their departments and units. Anyone who feels they haven’t received the survey is encouraged to look in their email inboxes and spam for “FHS Diversity & Climate Survey”.
Anyone who has not received the Diversity and Climate Survey through their work email should contact FHS Faculty Affairs at facultyaffairs@mcmaster.ca.
