An award recognizing an individual’s outstanding contribution to the advancement of critical care sciences in Canada is being given to Deborah Cook.
She is to receive a 2017 Distinguished Lecturer Award in Critical Care Sciences from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) and the Canadian Critical Care Society (CCCS).
The award will be presented at the 2017 Canadian Critical Care Forum (CCCF) in October, where Cook will give a keynote lecture as part of the scientific program.
“Passion to improve the experience and the outcomes of critical illness is shared by many investigators, research staff and clinicians across the country,” said Cook, a professor of medicine as well as health research methods, evidence, and impact. “I’m honoured to receive this on behalf of all of us working to achieve better care for our patients and families.”
Cook’s multi-method, multi-disciplinary research interests include life support technology, prevention of ICU-acquired complications, end-of-life care and research ethics.
Cook has published more than 700 peer-review articles and supervised many young trainees and faculty.
She has also received numerous local, national and international awards for her practice, teaching, mentorship and research. Last year, she was named an Officer of the Order of Canada for her contributions to improving the care of critically-ill patients.
