Health Sciences Library
The Health Sciences Library supports all education and research programs of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The library serves as a valuable resource for the students in the Faculty’s various programs and the local medical community. Located at the north-west corner of the McMaster Health Sciences Centre, the library had a major $8.6 million renovation, completed in 2007, which incorporated the latest in technology, additional group learning, and quiet study areas, and included the construction of the two-story Jan and Mien Heersink Reading Pavilion. The Library has seating for 760 people and provides many of the resources needed for the Faculty’s problem-based, self-directed methods of teaching and learning.
McMaster University Health Sciences Centre
Located on campus, the McMaster University Health Sciences Centre houses both McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and the McMaster site of Hamilton Health Sciences hospitals. The Main Street West building also houses the McMaster Children’s Hospital, the second largest children’s hospital in the province. The tertiary-level hospital occupies about 60% of the building and the Faculty has its administrative offices and classrooms, including the School of Nursing, in the rest of the space. The award-winning building, completed in 1972, was designed by Eberhard Zeidler of the Toronto architecture firm Craig, Zeidler and Strong.
Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery
The five-story Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery (MDCL), opened in 2004, provides state-of-the-art facilities for both education and research. Tied to the Health Sciences Centre by pedestrian walkways, it houses several of the Faculty of Health Sciences’ programs, including the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and the midwifery, physician assistant and Bachelor of Health Sciences programs. Cutting-edge institutes housed at the centre include the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute and the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care, as well as the National Pain Centre. Its facilities include Canada’s first university human vector lab, the Robert E. Fitzhenry Vector Laboratory and the David Braley Stem Cell Library. The 300,000-square-foot facility has a dramatic three-story glass atrium at the entrance.
Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences
The Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) is a joint initiative between the Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services at Mohawk College. Located on the grounds of McMaster University, the institute houses the School of Rehabilitation Science, with graduate programs in occupational therapy, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, along with Mohawk students involved in the McMaster-Mohawk-Conestoga BScN Program.
