CHEPA director among team assessing pandemic’s impact on children, youth

CHEPA Director Jean-Éric Tarride is among an interdisciplinary team of McMaster researchers who will be conducing a major investigation into the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on children and youth in Canada.

The $3.1 million project is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and will be led by Kathy Georgiades, Associate Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences, who will collaborate with principal investigators at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, The Hospital for Sick Children, and the Children’s Health Policy Centre at Simon Fraser University.

The team of researchers will partner with Statistics Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Children’s Healthcare Canada to collect data on children’s physical, mental, and social well-being.

The research will involve almost 27,000 children and youth aged five to 21, and the information gathered will be used to develop strategies that will help young people recover from and minimize any long-term effects of the pandemic.
