Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, where the integration of education, research, and community partnership comes to life.
We embrace a distinctive approach to learning through our two undergraduate programs in Biochemistry, and Biomedical Discovery & Commercialization (BDC). From the beginning to the end of the programs, we seamlessly weave research and career growth into the curriculum to give students the right set of skills to be successful regardless of their future career path. Our Biomedical Discovery & Commercialization program takes this commitment even further by providing students with experiential learning opportunities in the private sector through a professional internship. These hands-on experiences equip students with lifelong skills and a deep professional network to help jumpstart their careers.
As the most research-intensive department at McMaster, our graduate programs and postdoctoral training program attract exceptionally talented researchers from across the country and beyond. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows work alongside field-leading faculty members, in a wide array of research areas, including microbiology and infectious diseases, cancer biology, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, immunometabolism, human genetic diseases and more.
In the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, we encourage researchers at all levels to think big. We believe that by daring to tackle the most pressing problems in our fields, we can drive transformative change. Whether it’s unraveling the mechanisms of drug resistance, investigating novel therapeutic approaches, or elucidating the molecular basis of genetic disorders, our collective efforts have the potential to shape the future and create a lasting impact on our world.
