McMaster University alumnus Ryan Chadwick is returning to his alma mater as a professor at the Niagara Regional Campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
Chadwick, a family physician, is the inaugural holder of the Niagara Professorship in Family Medicine, created at the campus to recognize, encourage and grow family medical research and scholarship within the Niagara Region. His professorship is being funded by both McMaster and community donors.
“There are lots of opportunities for research, and a keen group of medical learners often looking to help out. I would like to see us bring more research into the family medicine clinics in the area,” said Chadwick.
His research will focus on the care of marginalized communities within the Niagara region. As a professorship holder, he will also provide mentorship and leadership skills development for learners and faculty members alike.
Chadwick graduated from McMaster in 2018 and completed his residency at the Thorold Family Health Centre. He is returning to Thorold after a year in Calgary spent training in emergency medicine.
As well as practicing family medicine in the Niagara region, Chadwick will hold a faculty appointment at McMaster’s Department of Family Medicine.
“We had close colleagues and friends, interesting academic opportunities, and a community we liked,” said Chadwick about his reasons for returning to Niagara.
Amanda Bell, regional assistant dean of Niagara Regional Campus, said Chadwick’s endowed professorship will benefit those in the community who need it most.
“The Niagara Family Medicine Professorship will allow local physicians to do important research on the care of marginalized populations and we will see improved health care delivery and outcomes for individuals and families in Niagara,” said Bell.
“Dr. Ryan Chadwick has both the skills and the drive to serve as the inaugural holder of this position and will be an inspiration and role model for family physicians and medical learners in Niagara.”
