As COVID-19 continues to change the way we live, the global push to develop an effective vaccine is unprecedented. As many different vaccine strategies and candidates are being developed, MIRC’s Dr. Zhou Xing and his team of researchers ask, what hurdles do we need to overcome to develop a successful COVID-19 vaccine?
In this review article first authored by Dr. Mathy Jeyanathan and Dr. Sam Afkhami, the team provides an insightful overview of the immune response to COVID-19 infection. They pinpoint the weak spots in our immune system that correlate with disease severity and interrogate how this may impede vaccine development and the development of immunity to SARS-CoV-2. Further, they define what would constitute a successful vaccine in terms of the immunity it would present. Finally, the review provides an in-depth analysis of different types of COVID-19 candidate vaccines currently in development and evaluates the benefits and drawbacks of each strategy. The analysis of these candidate vaccines will be critical as they each reach final clinical trials, at which point the safest and most effective options will need to be chosen to administer to the population.
Congratulations Mathy, Sam, Zhou, and all co-authors on the publication of this impactful review!
