What does a food desert look like? A ground zero approach
Guides neighbourhoods to identify food deserts and strategies to overcome them.
With the closure of Giorgio’s No Frills in April of 2016, access to full-service grocery stores (also known as supermarkets and superstores) has become a concern for the residents of the Crown Point neighbourhood in East Hamilton. Due to the rise of these concerns, this video presents determinants to guide the neighbourhood partners towards identifying what a food desert is as well as parallel and contrast the identified determinants of food deserts with the conditions that exist in Crown Point. This is done using a ground-zero approach, analyzing the factors present in the neighbourhood itself and applying the determinants identified in a community-engaged perspective versus an academic perspective. The conclusions outlined work together to aide neighbourhood representatives in determining the strategy they wish to devise with and for the Crown Point community.
