McMaster University’s Harriette Van Spall has been named as the recipient of an inaugural Women as One Escalator Award, an international initiative aimed at catalyzing the careers of exceptional women in cardiology.
Van Spall is an associate professor of medicine at McMaster, a cardiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), and a scientist with the Population Health Research Institute of McMaster and HHS.
“I am honoured to receive this award and deeply grateful to Women As One for this opportunity,” said Van Spall. “I look forward to working with the Women As One to create a global network that offers women in cardiovascular research the mentorship and sponsorship that they may not receive at their home institutions. Through the global research network we create, we will offer women principal investigators ways to rise above the glass ceilings they face in their institutions and to become mentors and sponsors of other women.”
The Women as One Escalator Award provides leadership training, research support, speaking opportunities and a group of key professional contacts with which recipients can further grow their potential.
Winners receive $50,000. The award review panel was made up of eight senior physicians from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America.
Van Spall will formally receive the award at the American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago at the end of March.
