John Kelton, a native of Windsor, was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by the University of Windsor at its recent Faculty of Nursing convocation.
The honour is meaningful for Kelton, who was born and raised in the city, and graduated from Riverside Secondary School. His parents, John and Helen Kelton, continue to call Windsor home.
“This is a wonderful tribute as, no matter where I am, Windsor will always hold a special place in my heart,” said Kelton. “I was raised in Windsor, my parents live in Windsor and I have friends there. To go home last week and be presented with this honorary degree was incredibly meaningful.”
Kelton, who recently became a Distinguished University Professor for McMaster, is the executive director of the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare at McMaster University. He took the role last year after completing a successful 15-year term as dean and vice-president of McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences and dean of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. Kelton has an active clinical practice as a hematologist for Hamilton Health Sciences, along with an internationally-recognized research program in platelet and bleeding disorders.
At the convocation, he was given tribute for both his success in growing the Faculty and the medical school, as well as his international impact as a researcher and hematologist.
“He has been quoted as saying that he is very much a product of his Windsor upbringing,” said Linda Patrick, dean of nursing at the University of Windsor, in her remarks at the convocation. “Today, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Kelton and his family home to Windsor to celebrate his illustrious career as a hematologist, clinician scientist and academic leader.”
Kelton has received numerous national and international awards and honours, including most recently the 2015 Prix Galien Research Award and membership in the Order of Canada.
