Tammy Troy-Hempey formally begins as the executive director of education services for the Faculty of Health Sciences this week.
Troy-Hempey, who spent the past eight years as the director of administration of the Department of Pediatrics, started transitioning into her new role at the beginning of November.
“It is a wonderful opportunity that allows me to focus on education, which is critical to the departments, schools and Faculty,” she said.
Troy-Hempey holds diplomas in management studies and human resource management and a certificate in advanced executive leadership from McMaster University as well as certificates in leadership strategies for evolving health care executives from Harvard, and in health law from York University.
Prior to coming to McMaster, Troy-Hempey spent nearly a decade as the manager of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
She said she will miss her department, but looks forward to the new role.
“I feel grateful I have this chance, but I also feel sad to leave my department as the department leadership, faculty and staff were second to none,” she said. “We are lucky at McMaster for these opportunities to foster personal and professional growth.”
Troy-Hempey added she is grateful for the extensive groundwork of her predecessor Susan Birnie, who retired this fall.
“Susan Birnie and the group have done an outstanding job and it is a pleasure to come into a position so well structured,” she said. “I want to make my own mark, as well as build on her successes. I have big shoes to fill.”
Alan Neville, associate dean of health professional education of the Faculty of Health Sciences, said Troy-Hempey’s reputation for excellence, experience in the Faculty and positive attitude made her an excellent candidate for the job.
“Tammy has provided administrative, financial and operational leadership at McMaster that will be an asset in this role,” said Neville. “We believe her experience and enthusiasm make her a promising addition to the Faculty of Health Sciences education team.”
