Transforming healthcare through technology: Kay Wu wins CMA award
Kay Wu, a third-year medical student and MGD Health ICE Innovators in Scrubs program graduate, has won the Canadian Medical Association’s Dr. Brian Brodie Medical Learner Leadership Award.
Third-year medical student Kay Wu has won the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) Dr. Brian Brodie Medical Learner Leadership Award. Each year, CMA gives the award to one student and one resident who demonstrate dedication, commitment, and leadership.
Wu is a graduate of the Michael G. DeGroote Health Innovation, Commercialization & Entrepreneurship (MGD Health ICE) Innovators in Scrubs program. During her time in the program, she developed the digital tool Clearly to help patients understand their medical records. The project was selected for further development in the summer 2020 cohort of The Clinic @ Mac’s Residency Program. Clearly is currently under development.
In 2019, Wu developed a program for students to take medical histories, perform exams, order investigations, and develop treatment plans for simulated patients. MacSim won an Ontario Medical Student Association Innovator Grant and has now benefited over 100 medical students.
During the pandemic, Wu also launched 3DPPE with several peers. The organization used 3D printing technology to create more than 22,000 face shields for healthcare workers in Hamilton and Toronto.
