Researchers interested in exploring the commercialization potential of their work have a new reference guide, courtesy of the Demystifying Medicine Program. Students in the program recently explored the discipline of academic entrepreneurship and outlined some of the initiatives, programs, and mentors in place at McMaster University that can help move scientific discoveries towards market entry.
“We have come a long way since the Demystifying Medicine Program started in 2012. Our trainees have now generated over 850 educational videos on various topics in science, medicine, communication, and education,” said Kjetil Ask, Associate Professor of Medicine. “More importantly, the feedback we receive from students makes us confident that there is strong educational value in the process of making this material.”
Students recently began working with partner organizations to create new content. For the Academic Entrepreneurship video, students Terry Li and Abhiti Kuhad collaborated with Clinic Innovation Coach Milica Vukmirovic and Faculty of Health Sciences instructor Soumeya Abed.
“I truly enjoyed working with Terry Li and Abhiti Kuhad to inform future generations of students, graduates and postdocs about possibilities for entrepreneurship at McMaster and Canadian universities,” said Vukmirovic.
“Community partners provided expert input while [we] supplied [our] knowledge translation skills,” added Li.
The Demystifying Medicine channel has accumulated almost 15-million views worldwide with over 50,000 subscribers.
“Demystifying Medicine provided us with a unique platform to communicate [entrepreneurship in academia] with a large audience,” said Kuhad. “Working with my peers and the Demystifying Medicine team was an incredible experience. The collaborative and supportive environment helped enhance my teamwork skills while also gaining lifelong mentors.”
