Sussman named Chair of Oncology

Sussman brings experience as both a clinician and researcher to the position. His five-year term started on Sept. 1, 2017.
“My interest in being chair is rooted in my passion for excellence in research, education and clinical practice,” said Sussman. “It also stems from my pride in and deep commitment to McMaster University as an academic institution that has been so supportive throughout my career. This role gives me the opportunity to help each member of the department achieve their fullest academic potential.”
Sussman has an MD from the University of Toronto, and an MSc degree from McMaster University.
He became a faculty member at McMaster in 2000 as an assistant professor of medicine. He was named associate professor in the Department of Oncology when it was established in 2006. This past July, he was appointed professor.
Sussman has spent the past 17 years as a radiation oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, and he is also the director of the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit at the centre.
His research focuses on radiation therapy trials in breast cancer and lymphomas, the use of functional imaging and health services research with a focus on models of care and the care of cancer survivors.
As a clinician, he is interested in the treatment of breast cancer and hematological malignancies with radiation therapy.
“Dr. Sussman has been an important team member in the Department of Oncology from the beginning,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “In addition to his thorough knowledge of McMaster, he brings many other assets to the role through his work as a clinician, researcher and mentor.”
