James Paul, associate professor of anesthesia, has been named the chair of the Department of Anesthesia in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
He will serve in the position for a five-year term, which started Sept. 1, 2017.
Paul said he has many goals in mind as he starts this exciting new role.
“I am passionate about academic medicine and have been fortunate to practice at McMaster where there is a wealth of innovative research and educational activities,” said Paul. “I would like to further the academic mission of the Department of Anesthesia by supporting the current faculty, and developing the new and junior faculty. To do that, my focus will be on continuing research infrastructure and adding educational infrastructure to properly support our transition to the new competency by design residency training program.”
He noted he also hopes to establish a professorship that will give a faculty member more dedicated academic time.
Paul joined McMaster University in 2002 as research director in the Department of Anesthesia. He was named assistant clinical professor the following year. He has been associate chair of research in the department since 2008.
He has an MSc degree from McMaster and both a BSc and MD from the University of Calgary.
A long-time clinician, he has served as an anesthetist with Hamilton Health Sciences since 2000.
Paul’s academic and clinical interests encompass pain, perioperative medicine, patient safety and research methodology.
Many residents trained by Paul have gone on to be exemplary clinicians and researchers in anesthesia and related fields.
Paul is a member of a number of boards and committees, such as the Research Committee of the Association of Canadian University Departments of Anesthesia and the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Research Advisory Board.
“Dr. Paul brings a wealth of experience as an instructor, clinician, mentor and administrator,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “He has been a valuable member of the Faculty and will continue to be so at the helm of the Department of Anesthesia.”
