MIRC’s Trainee of the Month
Can you describe your research?
I study the effects of age-associated inflammation on microglia cells in the brain using a mouse model. To measure the age-related changes in the function of the brain, I use classical behaviour tests and new automated equipment to track the learning and memory performance of mice. My short-term goal is to explore a novel automated IntelliCage system for pre-clinical studies in the Aging Laboratory, and use it to answer how immunosenescence, infection, and metabolism can effects cognition and behaviour. My long-term goal is to evaluate TNF as a potential biomarker of rapid neurodegeneration and determine if these findings could be translated and incorporated into routine clinical practice.
What advice would you give to future scientists?
Academia in itself is a meritocratic system. Our peers and seniors are constantly evaluated based on their publications, scholarships, and accolades. It can create an illusion that these things are the main/desired product of graduate studies. I believe that the graduate student in itself is the main product because they are receiving training to go on into the field of their choice (e.g. academia, industry, policy development, et.).What do you like to do when you’re not in lab? And by moving forward with their knowledge and skills, scientists can create new connections and collaborations. Therefore my main advice is to remind yourself how many things you have learned since the start of your graduate studies and use any opportunity to network with your peers.
What do you like to do when you’re not in lab?
I enjoy fencing! This kind of combative sport is a lot of fun. I might be competing with my teammates during a specific bout, but we are still on the same team and train together to improve ourselves. And the more advanced my opponent, the more exciting it is to figure out their tactics and attacks!
