Dr. John Kelton has many titles and honours to his name.
At the Faculty of Health Sciences convocation today, he added one that few receive.
Kelton, a professor of pathology and molecular medicine at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, was conferred with the lifetime title of Distinguished University Professor.
This is the highest honour bestowed by the University and recognizes extraordinary faculty members with outstanding contributions in scholarship and education.
In conferring the honour today, McMaster President Patrick Deane outlined Kelton’s research innovations in hematology that have changed clinical practice world-wide, and his “signature contributions” during 15 years as dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
“In medical education and research, Dr. Kelton is an administrative leader with few peers. He oversaw the doubling of the Faculty’s enrolment, the creation of regional campuses in Waterloo and Niagara, the addition of clinical campuses in Brantford and Burlington, the development of the David Braley Health Sciences Centre, the inception of a new selection process for medical students – a system now employed across Canada – and historic investments in research.”
Kelton’s research contributions have led to numerous national and international awards for research excellence, which most recently have included the Prix Galien award for research and membership in the Order of Canada.
Kelton is also the executive director of the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare.
The title of Distinguished University Professor was created by the university in 1996. No more than two per cent of all full-time faculty members at McMaster may be a Distinguished University Professor.
