We dove into the history of the existing salt recommendations, illuminating that there is a lack of evidence to support the claims that high sodium intake leads to hypertension, and in fact, effects of low sodium intakes are underestimated.
For decades people have been advised to decrease their sodium intake to regulate their blood pressure and guard against heart disease. We interviewed Dr. Andrew Mente, an investigator for the epidemiology program at the Population Health Research Institute and a nutrition and diet expert. We dove into the history of the existing salt recommendations, illuminating that there is a lack of evidence to support the claims that high sodium intake leads to hypertension, and in fact, effects of low sodium intakes are underestimated.
