The diabetic foot is a general term often used to convey the variety of foot problems that diabetic patients may encounter over the course of their lives. The prevalence of diabetes in Canada is estimated to be around 3.5 million in the year 2016 and the projected number in 2026 is expected to increase to around 4.9 million people. Canada is faced with a 41% increase in diabetes over the next decade. Along with the increase in the number of Canadians with diabetes, it is also expected that the number of foot problems associated with diabetes will increase correspondingly. Diabetic foot ulcers are common among diabetic patients and can have a significant impact on disability and quality of life if not managed properly. This video looks at foot health care for diabetic patients, reviews the causes, risks, prevention and management strategies for foot ulcers and empowers diabetic patients to take an active role in the management of their own foot health.
