The new vice-dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and associate dean of graduate studies (health sciences) is Steven Hanna.
Hanna is a professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
“I’ve focused most of my career on teaching and leadership in graduate education because I believe it is among the most important things we do at a research intensive university,” said Hanna. “I’m excited and thankful for the opportunity to contribute to our excellent health sciences programs in this new role.”
Hanna begins his five-year term on July 1.
Hanna’s BSc from the University of Toronto and his MA and PhD from Western University are in psychology, and he joined McMaster in 2001.
He held a joint appointment from 2001 to 2017 in McMaster’s School of Rehabilitation Science and was a scientist at the CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research. His research has a focus primarily on quantitative approaches to research design and analysis with frequent applications to developmental and health services problems in childhood disability, as well as a variety of areas of clinical epidemiology and health services research.
Hanna has held a number of leadership and administrative roles at the university, which included two terms on the university’s senate, and eight years as assistant dean of the Health Research Methods Graduate Program. In 2018 he was the interim vice-dean (health sciences) and executive director of the School of Rehabilitation Science.
“I’m very pleased that Dr. Hanna is taking on this role as vice-dean for graduate studies, as he has proven his excellence in administration and academic leadership through his work with several programs, including with the School of Rehabilitation Science last year,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
