Dr. Jan Willem Gorter, past Director of CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, and long-standing scientist and physician at McMaster, accepted the Canadian Paediatric Society’s prestigious, 2022 Career Research Award.
In recognition of an outstanding career in pediatric research in this country, Dr. Jan Willem Gorter, past Director of CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, and long-standing scientist and physician at McMaster, today accepted the Canadian Paediatric Society’s prestigious, Career Research Award.
The award is given to a Canadian-based researcher who shows significant impact on the field of child health as demonstrated by traditional research impact metrics, their influence on others to develop research careers, and by the novel collaborative relationships facilitated by the scientist to enhance research knowledge.
Currently, Head of Pediatric Rehabilitation at the University Medical Center Utrecht, in The Netherlands, and professor of Pediatrics at McMaster, Jan Willem leads an internationally recognized research program that advances the knowledge of health development of people with disabilities, and that enhances research capacity in ‘Lifecourse Health Development’ through mentorship and training. He is a strong advocate of partnering with young people and their families in research.
With his team of clinicians and researchers, Jan Willem aims to bring the complex care of children with developmental disabilities and the family to a higher level and thus improve their health, optimize their participation in society, increase their autonomy, and facilitate their transition into adulthood.
The Canadian Paediatric Society awards are presented to recipients during the society’s annual conference, held in Montreal this year from May 26-28. Jan Willem will accept the award by video.
