Sharon Cameron, who oversaw McMaster University postgraduate medical education for 25 years, is receiving a national award for her work.
She is being honoured for her contributions to improving the lives of resident doctors in Canada with the Ross Award for Service to Resident Doctors from the Resident Doctors of Canada (RDoC) association. The organization represents more than 9,000 resident doctors.
She was manager of the Post-Graduate Medical Education (PGME) program for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine from 1991 to 2016, and she is currently managing the implementation of competency-based medical education at the school.
As manager of the program she became universally recognized by faculty and trainees as the “heart and soul” of PGME at McMaster, and nationally renowned for her knowledge of the medical education system.
“The quality of the environments that Canada’s resident doctors train in are critical to every Canadian, as residents are an integral part of the frontline of patient-centered health care, serving as teachers, trainees, and clinicians,” said Dr. Kimberly Williams, president of RDoC.
The award will be presented on April 30 at the Canadian Conference on Medical Education in Winnipeg.
