Dr. Michelle Zeller Awarded Department of Medicine Annual Award for Associate Professors

Dr. Zeller has published 38 peer-reviewed papers, 15 as first author and 3 as senior author.
Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Zeller on being awarded the Department of Medicine Annual Award 2021 for Associate Professors. She was promoted to Associate Professor effective July 2020.
Dr. Zeller is an Associate Professor and clinical hematologist with the Division of Hematology & Thromboembolism; Department of Medicine and the Co-Director of Operations, Transfusion Medicine for Hamilton Health Sciences. She is in her 6th year as Program Director for the Transfusion Medicine Area of Focused Competence Diploma Program at McMaster University and works as a Medical Officer at Canadian Blood Services. Prior to joining faculty at McMaster in 2015, she completed postgraduate training programs in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine in addition to a Masters in Health Professions Education.
Dr. Zeller contributes to Transfusion Medicine education-delivery locally, nationally and internationally. She is a dedicated clinician with focus on benign hematology and Transfusion Medicine. Her involvement in transfusion practice spans vein to vein, from product collection, manufacturing and distribution to product request and post transfusion surveillance and utilization.
As a core member and Director of Education for the McMaster Centre for Transfusion Research Dr. Zeller leads and participates in clinical research on blood alternatives such as intravenous iron, blood product utilization, informed consent and impact of blood donor characteristics on recipient outcomes. Dr. Zeller is currently leading a CIHR funded pilot multi-centre randomized control trial on donor-recipient sex matching for red cell transfusions in critically ill adult patients. She is also leading funded data-driven and clinical research on the impact of IV iron on patient outcomes in iron deficient women undergoing gynecologic procedures and women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding.
