Dr. Michael Tsang Wins Department of Medicine Annual Award for Associate Professors
Dr. Tsang is Assistant Program Director of the Cardiology Residency Program and an academic advisor.
Congratulations to Dr. Michael Tsang on winning one of the Department’s Annual Awards for Associate Professors. Dr. Tsang joined the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, in July 2015. He was promoted to Associate Professor effective July 2020.
Dr. Tsang obtained his BSc in Pharmacology, and his MD from the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed his internal medicine and cardiology residency from 2010-2014 and his fellowship in interventional cardiology from 2013-2015, at McMaster University. Also, he has Master of Science in Health Science Education which focused on the study of clinical judgment and was funded by the Department of Medicine Career Award. In 2022, he will be furthering training with a one-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Intensive Care at McMaster where he’ll be the first fellow in this new fellowship program. After completion, he aims to assist the ECMO team (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) in further developing infrastructure with mechanical circulatory support in the heart investigation unit.
Currently, Dr. Tsang is the Assistant Program Director of the Cardiology Residency Program, since July 2021, and an academic advisor for the last 4 years. He has also been involved in teaching at the postgraduate and undergraduate level.
In addition to his academic appointment at McMaster, Dr. Tsang was appointed to the position of Interventional Cardiology at Hamilton Health Sciences (HSC), and at the Niagara Health System. He is primarily based at St. Catherines General Hospital. As a Director of the Heart Investigation Unit in St Catharines, he developed mock code simulation that is currently used in the Heart Investigation Unit at the HGH and has developed a Code Blue Arrest Protocol for use in this unit.
Further, he collaboratively developed the Niagara Health System Post Cardiac/ Stroke Alert Protocol, the Post Cardiac Catheterization Vascular Emergency Protocol and the Heart Unit Investigation Unit Code Cardiac Protocol. The purpose of these protocols is to implement quality improvement measures in order to reduce/ eliminate the risk of severe medical emergencies, or even death. He is also the Director of the Niagara STEMI working group which has established protocols to improve transfer times for patients requiring primary percutaneous intervention for STEMI
As a Co-Director of the Regional HHS Heart Team Rounds he established a forum for multidisciplinary decision making for patients with complex cardiac disease. Work in these rounds was co developed with research funded by the New Investigator Fund and published in JAMA Network Open in 2020.
In recognition of his commitment to clinical excellence, Dr. Tsang was awarded the Douglas Holder Professionalism in Cardiology Training Award in 2013. He also received the Chief Medical Resident Award by the Internal Medicine Residence Program in 2010.
Dr. Tsang contributes to research through collaboration on clinical trials and through involvement with quality improvement initiatives. Results of his research were presented at the 2014 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.
