Dr. Flavia Kessler Borges Wins Prestigious Investigator Award

Dr. Borges has published an impressive 45 peer reviewed papers, including three in the Lancet.
Congratulations to Dr. Flavia Kessler Borges on winning the Early Investigator Award from the Society for Perioperative Research and Care (SPRC) and the Roche Junior/Mid-Career award – First place, for her abstract presentation on Myocardial injury in hip fractures: a HIP ATTACK-1 substudy, as part of the Perioperative Care Congress Research Competition.
Dr. Borges is an Internist and Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine and an investigator in the perioperative and surgery research group at Population Health Research Institute (PHRI). Her research is focused on perioperative cardiac biomarkers, and perioperative strategies to improve clinical outcomes in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.
Early Investigator Award
The Early Investigator Award recognizes early career investigators and their accomplishments in the field of Perioperative Medicine. This Award aims to recognize an individual whose research scholarship has resulted in recognition with peer funding and impactful findings that illustrate innovative research in perioperative medicine. The Award identifies an individual whose body of work supports outstanding achievements that lay the groundwork for a sustained and influential research career.
Dr. Borges has published an impressive 45 peer reviewed papers, including three in the Lancet (one as the first author), one in JAMA, three in the Annals of Internal Medicine, and three in the CMAJ. She has also published eight book chapters, two commentaries, and 36 abstracts. Dr. Borges has received >$3 Million in peer reviewed grant funding as a Principal Investigator, including just under $2 Million in Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) funding for the HIP ATTACK-2 Trial. She has been a co-investigator on grants that have received >$11 million in funding.
In addition, Dr. Borges has developed a very important perioperative research program focusing on structural issues in the perioperative setting. She has led and is leading HIP ATTACK-1 and 2 and she is also leading the FAST trial exploring the impact of accelerated surgery versus standard care in patients with acute cholecystitis. She is a generous, committed, supportive mentor to her students and residents and also manages to find the time to organize and facilitate the monthly Perioperative Care Journal Club meeting.
