Dr. Aliya Khan, a Trailblazer in Parathyroid Research

Dr. Khan is the principal investigator evaluating the epidemiology, presentation, management and complications of hypoparathyroidism in the Canadian National Hypoparathyroidism Registry.
Dr. Aliya Khan, a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, is the global lead investigating the use of long acting PTH molecules in the medical management of hypoparathyroidism. She is also the principal investigator evaluating the epidemiology, presentation, management and complications of hypoparathyroidism in the Canadian National Hypoparathyroidism Registry.
Her research has focused on developing new molecules for the treatment of parathyroid disease and she has led the global phase 3 trial of cinacalcet in primary hyperparathyroidism as well as an international study evaluating bisphosphonates in primary hyperparathyroidism.
in 2019, Dr. Khan led the development of International Standards of Care for Hypoparathyroidism. Currently, she is leading the development of new global guidelines for hypoparathyroidism in partnership with approximately 50 International Endocrine societies and associations.
In addition, she is the founding chair of the annual Canadian Endocrine Update Scientific symposia as well as the annual Day in Endocrinology for Primary Care. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSEM) and represents CSEM on the International Society of Endocrinology program planning committee.
Osteoporosis
Meanwhile, in 2005, Dr. Khan developed the Calcium Disorders Clinic at McMaster University, a Center of Excellence for the management of Calcium disorders. The Calcium Disorders Clinic is a tertiary referral center and evaluates patients with complex calcium and parathyroid disease from across Canada. This program has also served as a focal point for clinical research and medical education for students, residents and fellows. In 2015 she also developed the Fellowship in Metabolic Bone Disease at McMaster University.
In addition, Dr. Khan is the Chair of the Rapid Response Committee of Osteoporosis Canada as well as the Co-chair of the Knowledge Translation committee of Osteoporosis Canada. She is a Scientific Advisor of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and Chair of the International Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Task Force, and she led the development of the first international position paper on the Diagnosis, Prevention and Management of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw published in 2015 in JBMR (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research).
Dr. Khan is a peer reviewer for the CPSO for Endocrinology and Metabolism and led the development of Quality Improvement Tools for Clinical Care in Endocrinology and Metabolism. She has over 200 scientific publications on osteoporosis and parathyroid disease as well as numerous book chapters. Additionally, she is the Editor or Co-Editor of textbooks including the Handbook of Parathyroid Diseases and the Textbook of Bone Metabolism, Parathyroid Gland and Calciotropic Hormones.
Dr. Khan has received numerous national and international awards including the International Clinician Instructor of the Year 2011 award by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for 2012 for excellence in clinical care, research and teaching, the International Osteoporosis Foundation Award for publishing excellence in 2017, as well as the International Hypoparathyroidism Award for 2014. In 2019 she was recognized as being in the top 0.1% of the world experts in hyperparathyroidism by Expertscape. In 2020 she was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of osteoporosis research and education in Canada by Osteoporosis Canada and awarded the Lindy Fraser award (in the photo above).
