Coombes named Chair of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences
Brian Coombes has been appointed the chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Coombes is a professor of biochemistry and biomedical sciences. He also holds the Canada Research Chair in Infectious Disease Pathogenesis and is a University Scholar.

His five-year term started on Jan. 1, 2018.
“It is an honour and a privilege to lead one of the most research-intensive departments at McMaster,” said Coombes. “Our department has bold ambitions to lead in biomedical discovery, and this provides our focus for much of what we do.”
He is a McMaster alumnus, with a BSc (Honours) in Biochemistry and a PhD in Medical Sciences, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia’s Michael Smith Laboratories.
Coombes joined the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University in 2006. His research focuses on enteric bacteria associated with acute and chronic human diseases. He also has extensive experience teaching and mentoring students at all levels of academia.
Coombes was appointed acting chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences on Sept. 1 2017. He succeeded Karen Mossman, who was named the University’s associate vice-president, research.
“Dr. Coombes has made a name for himself in both research and student mentorship at McMaster,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “The tremendous list of accomplishments by this McMaster alumnus makes him well-suited to be chair of this very active department which recently marked 50 years of success.”
