Clare Mitchell returns to the Faculty as COO
Clare Mitchell is returning to the Faculty of Health Sciences as its chief operating officer, effective Sept. 9, 2019. She had been the director of administration for the Faculty’s Department of Surgery from 1999 through 2012 when she left to be director of administration for the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. While there, she received a leadership award from the Faculty for staff impact.

She had been the director of administration for the Faculty’s Department of Surgery from 1999 through 2012 when she left to be director of administration for the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. While there, she received a leadership award from the Faculty for staff impact.
“Rejoining the talented and innovative team of McMaster University‘s Faculty of Heath Sciences and our community health partners is exciting,” she said. “I am looking forward to continuing to build strong relationships to support the excellent work being done here at McMaster.”
During her previous time at McMaster, Mitchell had several leadership roles on Faculty and university committees, as well as a stint as acting director of administration for the Department of Pediatrics.
She has an Honours BSc in zoology from the University of Guelph and a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa.
The Faculty’s chief operating officer (COO) is responsible to the dean and vice-president for matters regarding implementation of the strategic directions of the Faculty, legal disputes and contract negotiations. The COO reports to the vice-dean, clinical services regarding the clinical practice and alternative funding plans. She also supports academic leaders in supervision of the clinical and basic science departments of the Faculty’s schools.
“We welcome Clare back to McMaster and the Faculty,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “She is known for her strategic perspective and excellent team leadership skills and I know she will do well.”
She is taking the COO role from Kevin Sulewski, who is retiring after 28 years with the Faculty. He has held various leadership roles including manager of the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Medicine, executive director, clinical services as well as the inaugural executive director of the Hamilton Academic Health Sciences Organization (HAHSO), a role he has held since 2003.
As the Faculty’s COO since 2013, Sulewski accomplishments include the inception of the academic Alternative Funding Plan and HAHSO, operationalizing the doubling of the medical school enrolment, and the development of teaching family practice units in St. Catharines, Burlington and Hamilton.
