Associate professor of nursing Sandra Carroll, known for her achievements in cardiovascular nursing research, will be the acting associate dean and director of McMaster’s School of Nursing (SON), beginning July 1.
Carroll joined the nursing faculty at McMaster University in 2010. She is director of clinical health professional research, Hamilton Health Sciences and an associate scientist with the Population Health Research Institute. She is also an adjunct professor with the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing.
In her new role, Carroll will oversee the School of Nursing, including the popular McMaster-Mohawk-Conestoga BScN Program. She is following Carolyn Byrne, who is retiring as associate dean and director of the SON.
“I am honoured to serve the school, the University and the community,” said Carroll. “As a school we can contribute to global health impact by preparing the next generation of professional nurses, and by achieving academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.”
Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, said: “Dr. Carroll has a wealth of administrative, research and clinical knowledge, as well as the enthusiasm and vision needed to lead our nursing school and ensure the ongoing success of its highly successful and well-regarded education, and research programs.
“It will take some time to do an exhaustive search for the next associate dean and director, and we appreciate Dr. Carroll stepping up to take on this challenging role for the next year.”
After practicing as an RN, Carroll earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto in 1991, and her PhD from McMaster in 2010. She completed a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Strategic Training Fellowship in the FUTURE Program for Cardiovascular Nurse Scientists, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship through the Heart and Stroke Foundation/Michael G. DeGroote Chair in Cardiovascular Nursing Research.
Carroll has taught undergraduate BScN students across all sites (McMaster-Mohawk-Conestoga) and program streams (accelerated, basic). She also teaches and supervises MSc and PhD students within the school’s graduate nursing programs.
Carroll’s is recognized widely for her research on patient decision-making, decision support in the context of implantable cardioverter defibrillators, patient preferences for cardiovascular treatments, patient engagement, and patient reported outcomes in arrhythmia care.
As a principal investigator, Carroll has received operating funds from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and an Early Career Award from the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation.
