This video describes academic entrepreneurship, a new career path where researchers have the unique opportunity to continue their academic research while also developing their own company – startup. Academic entrepreneurship allows researchers to retain their academic position while also being able to bring novel scientific discoveries to the market.
Numerous initiatives, programs, fellowships, access to mentors, innovation hubs, and many other resources are available to encourage academic entrepreneurship at Canadian universities. For instance, technology transfer offices (TTO) or technology licensing offices (TLOs) help with complex process of commercialization of scientific discoveries at University. McMaster Industry Liaison Office (MILO) functions as the TTO/TLO.
Further, university-based organizations such as Michael G. DeGroote Health Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (MGD Health ICE) operates three locations: The Clinic@Mac, The Clinic@Joe’s and The Clinic@DeGroote to bring together inventors from various disciplines and business leads with the common goal to foster academic entrepreneurship in healthcare. Regional Innovation Centres (RICs), such as Innovation Factory located at the McMaster Innovation Park provides programming, mentorship, access to startup funding and space. Lastly, campus-linked accelerators (CLAs), such as the Forge at McMaster University, provides support in creating, improving, and/or sustaining a culture of entrepreneurship and venture formation.
