Cheryl Main has taken the role of chair, Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, effective July 1, 2023. The appointment is pending final university approvals.
Main is a professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and an associate member of the Department of Medicine. She has served as associate chair of education for the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine since 2018 and in this role has helped spearhead improvements in both the monitoring of teaching activities and increasing engagement. She launched HTHSCI 2ML3, an undergraduate course that introduces students to the discipline of laboratory medicine. She is currently the microbiology representative for the Department’s General Pathology residency training program and provides teaching for Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease residents.
“I am pleased to have Dr. Main join our faculty leadership team and continue to lead advances and innovation at the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine,” said Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Main is well-regarded for her research, including in antimicrobial stewardship, translation of laboratory testing from research to the clinical laboratory, and laboratory utilization. She has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Outside the lab, Main is a clinical infectious disease physician at Hamilton Health Sciences and a medical microbiologist for the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program based at McMaster. She received the Clive Davis Award for excellence in patient care in 2021 and was nominated for the PAIRO teaching award last year.
Main completed her BSc in Biology/Pharmacology at McMaster in 1994, and her MD at McMaster in 1998.
“I am looking forward to working closely with our amazing faculty. There is so much talent in our Department and I believe there is no limit to what we can accomplish!” said Cheryl Main.
