Addictions

At McMaster University, we are most fortunate to offer a variety of programs and locations where residents can gain experience in Addiction Psychiatry.

All first year McMaster Psychiatry Residents complete a one-month rotation in Addiction Psychiatry at Homewood Health Centre, a nationally renowned program in Addictions Treatment. Further work at Homewood may be undertaken as horizontal and/or block (s)electives through the PGY2 to PGY5 years.

The Addiction Program at Homewood functions as an interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, addiction counsellors, social workers, chaplains and a psychological associate. Treatment is provided in both individual and group modalities including psychoeducational, process and tracking groups. In addition to clinical excellence, Homewood’s priorities include education and research, making it a site of excellence for residency training.

In Hamilton, St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Mental Health and Addiction Program has prioritized Addiction Treatment. The newly developed Concurrent Disorders program has been established which boasts a 20 bed unit in the West 5th Campus, designated specifically for the treatment of those with concurrent disorders. Additionally St. Joe’s Addiction Program incorporates treatment of concurrent disorders on all inpatient mental health units (i.e., acute and tertiary.) These exciting, comprehensive programs afford outstanding training opportunities for all residents.
