Architecture of Health is an annual public lecture at McMaster University, given by a researcher with expertise in the connections between architecture, physical space and health.
The lecture will address innovative approaches to health education, research, and care through the design, use and analysis of physical space, with a particular focus on the social determinants of health and their connection to space.
The lecture was established in 2022 by the family and friends of the late John R. Evans, the first dean of medicine at McMaster University to honour the renowned architect Eberhard Zeidler, who collaborated with Evans between 1967 and 1972 to build the McMaster Health Sciences Centre.
The award-winning McMaster Health Sciences Centre, combining both a tertiary hospital and university facility to teach health-care professionals, would transform how hospitals are created, built and used.
The lecture will be awarded to a candidate from Canada or abroad who is conducting research related to innovative approaches to health education, research, and care through the design, use and/or analysis of physical space, and has demonstrated a sustained record of publications; holds a faculty appointment at a recognized university; and is capable of delivering a high-quality lecture that will be of interest to a wide audience of health researchers, decision makers, architects, designers and the general public.
Anyone wishing to submit a nomination should include a one-to-two-page letter describing why the nominee is suitable to be the lecturer, based on the selection criteria above. They should also include a brief biography and a copy of up to three of the nominee’s most important publications or work demonstrating their innovative approaches to health education, research, and care through the design, use and/or analysis of physical space.
Candidates can submit nomination packages to ArchHlth@mcmaster.ca by March 31. For more information, please visit zeidler-evans.healthsci.mcmaster.ca/.
