A University of Calgary professor and chief of pediatric emergency medicine at the Alberta Children's Hospital is returning to Ontario to head up pediatrics at McMaster University and its academic hospital partners.

Angelo Mikrogianakis has been named chair/chief of the Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University; Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. He starts in the role on Dec. 1.

"It is an honour and privilege to be joining McMaster's world-class faculty dedicated to improving the lives and health of children and youth by fostering a brighter world," said Mikrogianakis. "I look forward to serving alongside the talented physicians, scientists and health professionals at the McMaster Children's Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences and St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton."

Mikrogianakis is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He has served as section chief and medical director of pediatric emergency medicine at the Alberta Children's Hospital since 2009.

Mikrogianakis earned a bachelor of science from the University of Toronto in 1993, and a medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1997. He completed his residency in pediatrics and fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine and trauma with the University of Ottawa at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

His clinical and teaching skills have established him locally, provincially and nationally as an expert in pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric critical care transport, pediatric trauma management and a pediatric disaster response specialist.

He has also made ongoing contributions to research as a principal investigator, co-investigator, collaborator, enabler and builder of research teams and infrastructure within the emergency department of Alberta Children's Hospital.

"The chair and chief of pediatrics is a demanding position with a high degree of responsibility to both the university and our hospitals," said Paul O'Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

"Dr. Mikrogianakis' long list of accomplishments makes him a valued addition to the talented team in pediatrics at McMaster University and to our hospital partners."
