Research Overview

The mandate of the Associate Chair (Research) is to promote and facilitate research within the Department.

The Associate Chair:

  • fosters the success of junior faculty involved in research activities
  • ensures that adequate Departmental resources are earmarked for research
  • advocates on behalf of new faculty vis-a-vis mentorship, space allocation and protected time for research activities
  • provides advice to faculty regarding funding opportunities and research strategies.

Junior faculty can apply for research funding through the Department of Medicine Internal Career Awards. These awards, which have a tenure of up to three years, are granted on a competitive basis. Awards are available for both Research and Education and are aimed at fostering the next generation of researchers and educators.

Increased levels of research funding in recent years from both peer-reviewed and industry sources reflects the excellence of the Department. These accomplishments are all the more noteworthy given the increasing emphasis on clinical productivity and the competitive nature of the grant review process.
