The McMaster Department of Medicine in collaboration with McMaster Research Partnerships (Dr. Darren Lawless), McMaster Innovation Park (Mr. Scott Bennett), McMaster Faculty of Engineering (Dr. Rakesh Sahu), Mulago Hospital/Makerere University, Uganda (Ms. Susan Nalugo, Dr. Robert Kalyesubula), Uganda Cancer Institute (Dr. Henry Ddungu, Mr. Godfrey Osinde), Uganda High Commission (Her Excellency Joy Acheng), and the Aga Khan University (Mr. Nizar Jiwani) have recently shipped donations (PPEs and Medical supplies) worth $750,000 to colleagues and patients in Uganda. The donated materials include masks, face shields, gowns, visors, and other much-needed equipment.

Through the Department of Medicine Global Health Program, we have continued to support learners/peers in Uganda and their faculty to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.   During the pandemic, we have been virtually teaching peers/learners in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Radiology.
Regarding Afghanistan, we have continued virtual teaching to our fellow colleagues in the areas of Internal Medicine, General surgery, Critical Care, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, and Obs/Gyne and have also developed an expert clinical group between the sites.  We will also be recruiting a Quality Improvement lead to look more at quantitative metrics regarding impact.

With regards to Syria, we have been working with Mental Health experts to deliver support in this area as this is a critical issue in the country.

As part of the PGME Global health committee, we will be holding a session for Afghan refugees to explore how the residents may be involved and we are working on a revised pre-departure curriculum for electives when safe travel is feasible.

Much of the above educational and clinical work is in collaboration with the Aga Khan Health Services, Aga Khan Health Board for Canada and with support from many individuals from the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, with the overall mandate to build capacity in a sustainable and culturally sensitive manner.

I’d like to thank Dr. Irene Turpie, Dr. Mark Crowther, Mr. Graeme Matheson, Dr. Serena Sennik and Dr. Catherine Clase, just to mention a few, for supporting this very important cause.
