The Division of Geriatric Medicine is the core member of the GERAS Centre for Aging Research. The GERAS Centre for Aging Research is part of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. Our mission is to make life better for older adults by bringing the best research to the frontlines of care as quickly as possible. Our primary research focus is to lead in research and innovation in the Geriatric 5Ms: mind, mobility, medications, multi-complexity by building a framework of what matters most for older adults. We are leaders in research, innovation and learning for the benefit of our community and the world.
We are at the forefront of several innovative research initiatives focused on maximizing the resilience of vulnerable older adults. With our rapidly aging population, and with more people living with chronic disease, our work has never been more important. We have been working hard towards our goal to enable people to age with dignity and independence.

A Hamilton-led international study of more than 3,000 patients could set the stage globally for how patients can safely use blood-thinning medications before and after surgery to mitigate risk of bleeding and stroke. The Perioperative Anticoagulation Use for Surgery Evaluation (PAUSE) study was conducted across 23 clinical centres in Canada, United States and Europe.

It's the recovery period, not the operating room that is risky for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, according to a large international study led by McMaster University. Based on patients at 28 health centres in 13 countries, the results show less than one per cent of deaths of these patients occurred in the operating room, but 29 per cent of deaths occurred after discharge from hospital.
