Dr. Derek Chu was appointed Assistant Professor, Division of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Medicine, effective July 1st 2021.
Dr. Chu leads an international team called Evidence in Allergy, which is comprised of an allergists, pediatricians, respirologists and trainees (graduate students, allergy fellows, postgraduate trainees, and undergraduate students). He is leading the TITAN, TRADE and C-CARE studies at McMaster aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of food allergy and anaphylaxis. Clinically, he directs the allergy challenge clinic for diagnosis, treatment and research based out of MUMC.
Dr. Chu holds several leadership positions including being the primary Methodologist for the American Academy and College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI/ACAAAI) Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters, Chair of upcoming AAAAI/ACAAI Atopic Dermatitis guidelines, Canadian Lead for Core Outcomes in Food Allergy, Section Editor, Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine, Current Opinion in Allergy and Immunology and Secretary and Treasurer, EAACI Research Methodology Committee. He was recently recognized by Pediatric Allergy & Immunology as Reviewer of the year.
Dr. Chu has over 80 publications and book chapters listed in Web of Science, with more than a dozen as first author and in top journals (The Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, CMAJ, etc.). Over the past five years, Dr. Chu has participated in multiple invited talks, conference abstracts and presentations. He is funded by AAAAI, AllerGen-CSACI-CAAIF, Health Canada, HAHSO, and the HHS New Investigator Fund. As a full-time faculty member, he will be involved in a combination of clinical, research and educational activities.
