Abigail Mackey is Associate Professor at Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and Institute of Sports Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital. She has a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from University Limerick, Ireland, where she also obtained her PhD (2003). It was after this she moved to Copenhagen as a post-doc and to study satellite cells in various human in vivo models. The main context is the loss and gain of human skeletal muscle in young and elderly individuals through exercise and inactivity interventions, as well as muscle regeneration after strain and experimentally induced injury, with the use of tissue microscopy and primary cell culture to determine the nature of cell-cell interaction and whether pharmacological agents are of physiological benefit.
