Covid19 & the Brain

Feb 25, 2021, 16:00 PM by Sukhsahij Gill, Katrina Hartmann and Mahima Joshi
In this video, we continue our exploration of the neurological impacts of COVID-19 by delving into the cellular mechanisms of how the virus infects and causes damage in our brain.

How does COVID-19 infect and disrupt our brain? In this video, we continue our exploration of the neurological impacts of COVID-19 by delving into the cellular mechanisms of how the virus infects and causes damage in our brain. Included is a brief refresher on relevant scientific concepts such as basic brain anatomy and functions. We then move onto the first major hypothesis of infection; the pathway of the virus from inhalation into our nose to the region of our brain that senses smell. Next, the video discusses the specific protein on the surface of the virus that enables it to enter our cells, and how our body’s response actually results in weakening our blood-brain barrier, and the hormone system that COVID-19 interferes with. In the style of a webinar, this video’s purpose is to be informative and establish a foundation for individuals to seek out further knowledge.
